These are some of the ranking or otherwise notable people who make their home at the Academy in Kaelthia.
The Tome-master is not the highest-ranking arcanist at the Academy. He’s the one who lost the bidding war to avoid being stuck as the Academy’s mage representative on the Council. A divination expert, Korthan is also the representative for the Oracle Society. While he rarely gets involved in the more political matters directly, he is tireless behind the scenes. His focus is in expanding and maintaining the power of the Oracle Society and the Academy in the life of the Council Lands. His power-base and influence were strongly shaken by the advent of the Catalysts (an event completely unforeseen by the Society) and he’s been working hard ever since to regain control. He is especially influential among the richer human population, who depend on the Society to retain their power. There are rumors that he attained his position more through blackmail and blacker magic than by traditional arcane prowess, but no credible evidence has reached the Scale-balancers yet.
Korthan is a human male in his late 30’s. Physically, he’s best described as a prolate spheroid--he’s substantially overweight for his height (5’4”). He often summons and rides a specialized Floating Disk when he needs to go more than a few paces. Mechanically, he’s a tier 1 wizard-style caster (2nd level spells). Whenever he’s out of the Academy, he travels with a significant bodyguard complement.
Personality: I'm a snob who looks down on those who can't appreciate fine art.
Ideals: Power. Knowledge is the path to power and domination.
Bond: I sold my soul for knowledge and plan to get fair value out of the bargain.
Flaw: I'm always in debt. I spend my ill-gotten gains on decadent luxuries faster than I bring them in.
The Brightsong is the ranking bard of the Bard’s College at the Graniteflame Academy. Dovara has held that post for the last 10 years. Some claim that it’s because her father is the Immortal Bard himself, but she’s shown herself to be a competent and effective leader. Politically she takes few sides, preferring to sit back and lob bombs to keep people arguing. If pressed, she’d say that gridlock is better than letting them make stupid decisions. Really, she just likes getting people to react. She loves drama. Personally, she’s known as a world-class flirt (just like her father) who loves to tavern-crawl, especially in the rougher areas.
Demographic Information: Dovara is an attractive middle-aged half elf in her mid 50s, but looks much younger. Her height (5’9”) and her bright copper-colored hair and green eyes set her apart from the common folk. She wears clothes cut in the common mode (rather than the fancy styles of the rich) but made from fine fabrics and secretly full of hidden pockets. Her preferred instrument is a finely-made lute. Mechanically she’s a Bard (VGtM) except with the spell casting of a 7th level caster (4th level spells).
Personality: Nobody stays angry at me or around me for long, since I can defuse any amount of tension. Unless I want them to be. I’m good at pressing buttons.
Ideal: Independence. I am a free spirit--no one tells me what to do.
Bond: My instrument is my most treasured possession, and it reminds me of someone I love.
Flaw: I once satirized a powerful man who still wants my head. It was a mistake that I will likely repeat.
High Magus Toriantholus sur Riain
Toriantholus (Tor) is a ranking High Magus at the Graniteflame Academy. He got his start by exploring the Towers of Earth, Sun, Moon, and Stars with the Catalysts as a Magus. He hitched his start to theirs and rose quickly. His specialty is historical enchantment, specifically focused on the magical practices of the pre-Cataclysm elven mages. He is not active politically, although his house belongs to the Arcanist’s Union and he is known to favor expansion. Serious in demeanor, he rarely jokes around. He works hand-in-hand with the Adventurer’s Guild and spends significant time at Hound’s Rest and the Guild offices there.
Tor is a middle-aged (~50) high elf of one of the High Houses. His house rank is Senior Member; he has a single child but is not involved in her life. Physically he is tall (6’3”) and blond, with emerald eyes. He wears simple robes. He is not particularly athletic, although he has the grace characteristic of the gwerin. Mechanically, he is a Diviner (VGtM) although he rarely prepares combat spells.
Personality: Dry and ascerbic, he takes everything seriously.
Ideal: Reason. Emotions shouldn’t rule our actions.
Bond: I owe everything to the Catalysts and will aid them wherever possible.
Flaw: I’m a bit of a coward and will prefer to send others into danger rather than face it myself.
Archmage Brynmor sur Golau
The archmage is the highest-ranking mage at the Graniteflame Academy. He’s been in that post for nearly 100 years, and some claim he’s no longer fit for the post. He rarely appears in public (and rarely leaves the Academy grounds). When he does he is flanked by his two aides. These aides are invariably young, beautiful, and female, and they change frequently. He’s catholic in his tastes, except that they all are well endowed. Sometimes they are mages, but rarely have any significant rank. He never gets involved politically. He is the House Head of House Golau, one of the staunch Gardener Houses, but ranking Senior Members run the House without his involvement. His area of specialty is Applied Abjuration--shields, wards, and long-term reinforcement spells.
Demographic Information: Brynmor is an ancient (nearly 200 years old) high elf. His hair is silver and he is heavily wrinkled. He still maintains significant magical power and is physically spry, although his hearing is going. Mechanically he is an Archmage (MM), but cannot cast 8th or 9th level spells.
Personality: Brynmor is a sexist flirt. He’ll flirt/fondle anything female, and doesn’t always take no for an answer.
Ideal: Pleasure. I take what I can, wherever I can.
Bond: The Academy is my home, and I won’t leave it while alive.
Flaw: Easily distracted by a pretty face.
Alignment: N shading to NE
